How Ozone Works

Most of us are unaware of all of the areas in which ozone already plays a significant role in our lives; ther are many ways you may have already been using ozone everyday (ever drink bottled water? Wine? Bathe in a hot tub? Visit a waterpark? Eat a nectarine? An extraordinarily powerful sanitizer, disinfectant and antimicrobial by all definitions, ozone is 100% natural and biodegradable so by reducing harsh chemical usage in a given application it actually helps reduce environmental impact and is healthier for your body.

The ozone molecule consists of three oxygen atoms, one of which is unstable due to its single bond. When the molecule encounters an oxidizable substance (such as a fungal spore), the unstable atom splits off and destroys (oxidizes) that substance on contact, literally disintegrating it into its constituent elements. The ozone is thus reduced down to pure oxygen (O2) leaving no harmful byproducts. Ozone is generated from pure oxygen via two energy sources in nature: light energy from the sun in the atmosphere or electrical energy in the form of lightening. Energy breaks the double bond holding the oxygen atoms together, and when additional oxygen molecules in the environment encounter the oxygen atoms they combine to form O3 (ozone).
